The process of responding to the pollution in Izmir Bay, which peaked with mass fish deaths, has begun. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change established the “Izmir Bay Scientific Board” to determine the ways and methods to clean the bay.
The Scientific Board includes Manisa Celal Bayar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Department of Civil Engineering. Prof. Dr. B. Gültekin Sınır, Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering and Prof. Dr. Ergün Taş. Prof. Dr. Ergün Taşkın from the Department of Biology.
A meeting of the “Izmir Bay Coordination Board” was held under the chairmanship of Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and it was decided to form working groups with the members of the Scientific Board and to prepare immediate, medium and long action plans.
Consisting of 35 scientists, the board formed 3 sub-working groups: 'Improvement of Wastewater Infrastructure and Streams', 'Assessment and Improvement of the Marine Ecosystem' and 'Climate Change and Modeling Solutions'. These sub-groups came together and held the opening meeting with the participation of Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Fatma Varank and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay.
